A brief timeline of the Democracy Workers Collective ⬇️
Early 2020
The BIPOC Collective identifies several problem areas at the organization based on the experiences of it members.
They publish a Demands for Change letter that outlined these points, calling for action.
Late 2020
Democracy Works forms working groups that were meant to address the workplace problems identified by BIPOC at the organization.
However, they aren’t able to effectively enact change due to management’s lack of support; workers start organizing as an alternative to working groups.
July 2021
The Democracy Workers Collective goes public!
August 2021
Democracy Works voluntarily recognizes the collective after union demonstrates 98% support.
February 2021
Bargaining begins! This marks the beginning of a grueling process to secure rights and protections for all unit-eligible workers at Democracy Works.
The bargaining and table teams work to gather input and feedback from the unit, proposing the terms of our workplace and negotiating with management.
Early 2025
After over 3 years of hard work, the Collective votes to ratify its first contract!
This contract includes protections for wages, annual raises, parental leave, layoffs, and much more.
Present
As we head into this next chapter, we are focused on keeping our members unified and celebrating the wins in our contract, as well as identifying pieces we would like to get into our next contract.
